Apple's iMessage Lacks Key Storage Management Feature, Users Demand 'Optimize Storage' Option

Apple's popular messaging app, iMessage, is missing a key feature to help users manage their device storage: an "Optimize Storage" option. Currently, iMessage keeps all message history and attachments on users' devices, even if they are already backed up to iCloud. This can take up a lot of storage space, especially for heavy iMessage users or those with large iCloud Photo libraries.

In contrast, Apple's iCloud Photos has an "Optimize Storage" option that keeps only the most recently accessed photos and videos on the device, storing the full-resolution originals in iCloud. This helps save local storage without losing access to the entire photo library. Experts say iMessage could benefit from a similar "Optimize Storage" feature. This would let users automatically manage their iMessage cache by deleting older messages and attachments already backed up to iCloud while keeping the most recent conversations available offline.

The lack of such an option is particularly problematic for users with limited device storage. One user reported that their 64GB iPad couldn't be updated to the latest iPadOS version due to insufficient space, even though their iMessage history was stored in iCloud. Apple has shown it can selectively download iMessage data when restoring a device or setting up a new one, instead of syncing the entire iCloud backup. Adding an "Optimize Storage" setting could give users much-needed control over their iMessage cache.

Overall, an "Optimize Storage" option for iMessage would be a welcome improvement, helping users manage their device storage without permanently deleting message history. As Apple continues to enhance its ecosystem, addressing this storage management issue in iMessage should be a priority.
